Origin - Arni Silk has its origin to the early nineteenth century from Arni in Tamil Nadu, when famous Karigiri Mouna Gurusamy introduced it in several villages of North Arcot district followed up at Walajah and Arani. Traditionally the silk sarees woven in Arani were called DOBBY variety as the sarees are woven by using dobby with single thread warp and single thread weft. The border has thin line of Zari (gold thread) with total weighs of saree of about 300 grams. Later the technique of interlacing the body and border part of the saree through contrast weaving (KORVAI) was introduced. One important unique feature of the saree is its different colour patterns in body and border of the product. One of the important uniqueness of the product is that the sarees woven either with one side or double side border, but without interlacing (korvai) by using single warp or double warp with single weft or multiples up to 3 strands.
