Description
Goat fibre with less than 20 μm diameter is classified as cashmere wool
but the fibre from Changthangi or Pashmina goat of Ladakh region which are a special breed of goats to the high-altitude regions of 14000 ft above sea level has an average diameter of 8-16 μm, which is considered the best and warmest in the world. In the amidst the cold temperatures upto (-) 350 C, these goats develop a unique, incredibly soft pashm (inner coat) which is six times finer than that of human hair. The Pashmina wool of Ladakh has occupied a unique position among the fibres of animal origin because of its warmth, lightness, handle and its better ability to absorb dyes and moisture. On equal weight basis, it is having 3 times more insulating capacity as that of wool and due to uniform diameter, Pashmina Wool is different form sheep wool. The high altitude, cold aridity and availability of quality pasture of the Ladakh region are some of the important parameters for the lower diameter of the Pashmina wool fibre.
